Motherhood. What does it mean to you? In the first installment of my “Nurture” Series, I wish to show how a mother is a protector. In the realm of the barred owl, the mother broods with the chicks, keeping them warm and protected, until they are about 3 weeks old. Then she begins to assist the father in hunting and providing for them. How difficult is it for her to leave her young? Is she happy to be flying and hunting again? Is she anxious? Here, she returns after her first foray away from her little one.
